Editorial Charter

1 – The journal Etudes européennes was created in 2003 by the Centre of European Studies of Strasbourg (now ENA European affairs Directorate) and Sciences Po Strasbourg. Since 2006 the journal has benefited from the “European Public Administration Pole (PEAP)” label. It is available online only.

The review is intended primarily for European Union professionals, with a particular focus on public and private decision-makers, practitioners, academics, researchers, students and citizens with an interest in analytical debates on European topics. It aims to stand out as a journal of reference for European issues.

2 - Etudes européennes is dedicated to Europe. Multidisciplinary in nature, it maintains a strong focus on practical matters. Grounded in empirical experience, it also features insights from the social sciences, especially political science, law, economics, sociology, history, management, geography and philosophy. Relevant articles by experts recognised in their fields, as well as by young scientists, are published following assessment.

3 - Etudes européennes pursues the following objectives:

  • to enrich scientific debate on European issues by publishing analyses and accounts by European policymakers;
  • to foster dialogue between policymakers and academics;
  • to analyse the dynamics of Europeanisation from a multi-level perspective (local, national, European and international).

4 - The journal is organised around five permanent editorial sections:

a/ The “European Current Events Section features articles focused on newsworthy events in Europe.

b/ The “Thematic Reports Section features in-depth articles on European governance and sectoral policies. Articles may take several forms:

  • Background articles;
  • Articles written by expert practitioners on specific topics;
  • Interviews with specialists in relevant subjects;
  • Future-oriented articles.

c/ The “European Actors and Careers Section offers reviews of recent publications, as well as profiles of experts in European issues in the form of standardised questionnaires filled out by noted professionals in the field of European affairs.

d/ The “Presidency Fact SheetsSection regularly takes stock of the successive Presidencies of the Council of European Union since July 2008. This section includes fact sheets laying out quantitative parameters, as well as information on institutional mechanisms and national specificities in terms of European affairs management.

e/ The “European Agenda in Strasbourg Section provides information on events organised in Strasbourg or elsewhere by partners of the European Public Administration Pole (PEAP) on European issues (symposia, workshops, conferences, etc.).

In its “Events” menu, Etudes européennes also looks back on these symposia, exhibitions and conferences, with extensive use of various multimedia tools (photo galleries and videos).

5 - Rules for submission and assessment of articles:

Articles submitted to Etudes européennes may have been published in another paper journal (or book) in French. The Editorial Board must be informed if articles were published in another language or submitted to a foreign-language review.

All articles submitted to Etudes européennes are assessed by an Editorial Committee, which issues a reasoned opinion. Members of the Steering committee may be consulted as appropriate.

As necessary, Etudes européennes takes responsibility for translating texts accepted for publication.

6 - Presentation of articles

Texts submitted to the journal must be carefully and clearly written and supported by facts and analysis. Texts should not exceed 30,000 typed characters (spaces, footnotes and diagrams included). They should be preceded by a summary of 500 – 1,200 typed characters, spaces included, and ten key words in French and English.

Texts are addressed to the Editorial Board electronically (text applications) in Times New Roman 12-point font with 1.5 line spacing.

The format specified in the Publication procedure must be strictly adhered to, including for footnotes, references and Internet links.

Articles may be submitted in French or English.

7 – Terms of publication

If necessary, the Editorial Board may ask authors to make certain changes regarding form and substance. Once articles have been accepted, authors must send the final version of the submission to the Editorial Board electronically within the specified time limits.

Once these texts are accepted, only minimal editorial changes will be made (typographical or grammatical errors, etc.).
